Let’s be honest – We could all use a lot more laughter in our lives. Healthy, happy and vibrant children laugh hundreds of times per day. But how many times have you laughed today? Chances are – not nearly enough. Laughter Yoga is the perfect solution to bring more giggles, joy, positivity, happiness and overall well-being into your daily life.

Laughter Yoga is a fairly new practice of union through – you guessed it – laughter. This basic practice is simple and readily available to you. Absolutely anyone can partake in Laughter Yoga. Everyone knows how to laugh and everyone loves to laugh.

Typically, Laughter Yoga sessions are 30 minutes long and include a gentle warm up with movements to loosen the body. It is often combined with breathing (Pranayama) and characterized by quirky and silly gestures followed or accompanied by loud, hearty laughter. Laughter may be forced at first, but it inevitably transforms into enjoyably deep, authentic and spontaneous laughing fits.

It is highly recommended for anyone and everyone, especially those with worries, stress and uptight tendencies. Do you have a busy mind? This is for you. Tremendous joy is felt after a laughing session. I, myself, cried uncontrollably like a baby the first time I tried Laughter Yoga. They were the happiest happy tears I’ve had in a while. For the following hour, spontaneous giggles arose and the joy was carried with me throughout the entire day.

Besides the obviously fun and funny factors, there are multiple reasons to participate in Laughter Yoga. Here are a few of those reasons:

  1. Laughter is the Best Medicine

Laughing strengthens our immune system. Your body doesn’t know the difference between forced or true laughter – they have the same benefits and effect on your immune system. Smiling is contagious – laughter even more so.

  2. Learning to Let Go

You may feel a bit self-conscious at first but that quickly fades. Laughter comes in like a wrecking ball that breaks down the walls of inhibitions. The laughing bug spreads throughout the room almost immediately. After attending a session of Laughter Yoga, many claim feelings of euphoria, love, compassion and higher tolerance to both pain as well as otherwise seemingly stressful situations.

  3. Raising Your Vibration

It’s true that what you give is what you receive. The energies you put out in the world are the same energies that are drawn to you. Why not manifest more love in your life? People will feel your joyous presence and respond accordingly. I’m talking about people picking up those same good vibrations the Beach Boys rave about.

  4. Release of Tension

A good session of Laughter Yoga completely releases tension and stale energies you may be holding inside (and probably aren’t even aware that you’re doing so.) Releasing any dark and dirties that may be hiding in the deepest depths of your inner closet is incredibly liberating and leaves you feeling light and spacious.

  5. Playful, Pleasing & Pleasurable

Laughing releases endorphins, induces a positive mental state, generates enjoyable emotions and lifts your spirit. All you have to do is simply be present and evoke the vibrant, joyous child within.

Laugh Out Loud

Of course you can practice Laughter Yoga alone, but it is much better together with fellow laughing Buddhas. Contact Yoga studios near you and ask if they offer any Laughter Yoga classes – chances are they do! If not, there is the miracle of the World Wide Web which allows you to virtually join Laughter Yoga classes whenever, wherever. Thanks to the power of Google, you have various options at your fingertips. Laughter clubs like this one on LaugherYoga.org may meet on free applications such as Skype and are a great option if you can’t seem to find a Laughter Yoga studio near you.

Ho Ho, Ha Ha Ha

This practice originated in India but it’s very versatile. Each teacher may have their own personal style and variations of the same series. The exercises can be modified to your own liking. You can even make up your own “theme” or techniques. It doesn’t matter much how you get there as long as you participate fully and openly – the result is always an explosion of laughter. What’s important is that you find freedom, have fun with it and enjoy!
