Cellulite, yep we all know what it looks like and no of us want it but unfortunately it doesn’t discriminate and it can affect anyone old or young regardless of weight, it can also be genetic so if your mother there is a chance you may develop it. There are things you can do to help reduce it though.

What is it?

Cellulite, the dimpled orange peel effect mainly seen on thighs and buttocks (but can also be found in other areas of the body), is caused by connective tissue (collagen fibers) becoming damaged, brittle or inflexible allowing pockets of fat to push up under the surface of the skin.

Why do you have it?

The causes can be a variety of different reasons, including poor diet, lack of exercise, dehydration, poor circulation. So what can you do to get rid of cellulite or at least reduce the appearance?

Ways to reduce and minimize the appearance of cellulite

The ways listed below can help but not if they are done individually it is a combination of all the below that will help, if you want to rid yourself of your cellulite or at least minimize it as much as possible you need to be willing to put in the work, there are no easy fixes.You don’t have to invest in expensive creams or treatments either.

  1. Dry Body Brushing

    By body brushing you will help to increase your blood circulation and aid the lymphatic drainage system which helps rid your body of toxins and in turn can help reduce the appearance of cellulite. It also helps exfoliate and encourage skin cell renewal which all helps smooth your skin.     How to do it: The best time to body brush is just before a shower or bath. Start on dry skin and work from your feet upwards and brush upwards towards your heart.

  2. Massage

You don’t need to go and have an expensive massage, just grab some oil or moisturizing lotion and after you bath spend some time massaging the oil/lotion into your skin. Similar to body brushing this will also help improve circulation. You may have read that you should use special creams to rub in to help reduce cellulite but I think it is more to do with the massaging effect of rubbing those creams in than the actual cream itself.

  3. Exercise

    This is a necessity, not only to help reduce your body fat but because there are also other benefits exercise has on improving cellulite (reducing body fat will help shrink those little fat pockets pushing their way up under the skin – but remember you cannot spot reduce fat). A balanced program of cardio and strength training will help to reduce your body fat but also improve your muscle strength. With strength comes muscle toning and firming!

  4. Eat healthily

    An excess of saturated fats and sugars in your diet can be causing your cellulite. You need to look at what you are eating and drinking and see if this could be causing your cellulite, processed foods, sugars from sodas etc, the ‘unhealthy fats’ try to eliminate these from your diet as much as possible and if you increase the amount of foods high in antioxidants to help fight free radicals.

    You don’t have to cut out everything you enjoy completely but you need to assess why you might be gaining body fat, keep a food diary and it may show some surprises. Eating healthy has many benefits than just helping you not put on fat e.g. helps you maintain a healthy weight, it can also dramatically improve the condition of your skin, lowers the risk of developing diseases, improves your body’s function.. . the list goes on.

  5. Sleep

    We all know that when we sleep our body uses this time to help regenerate and repair itself this includes repairing damaged tissue. So try to get at least 8 hours of quality sleep per night.

  6. Stay Hydrated

    Ensure you drink water, water not only keeps you hydrated it also helps flush the toxins out of your system, those same toxins that can be contributing to your cellulite’s appearance!

There you have it, and straightforward, guide to how you can get rid of/reduce your cellulite. Remember though that you wont see results overnight, be prepared to put invest some time into your health and you will be rewarded.
