Fitness is a journey and everyone is at a different place in that journey. For some, this can be a long road. Staying motivated during your journey to a healthy lifestyle can be difficult at times. These tips for staying motivated will keep you moving even when the going gets rough.
The most important aspect of sticking to a fitness program is to set goals. Even if you are not trying to lose weight, you are pleased with your body, etc. – set a goal. You can always improve on something. Goals keep you moving towards something. Plus, it feels great to praise and reward yourself once you’ve reached that goal! And once you reach your goal, set a new one!
To stay accountable, schedule your workouts like you would any other meeting or appointment. If you keep a planner or schedule book, put it down in pen. If you use an online calendar, schedule yourself a daily appointment to be sure you don’t double book yourself and skimp on exercise. Even better, grab a friend to accompany you! If you’re having a rough day, they will be sure to get you to your workout and keep you moving. If you’re unable to recruit a workout buddy for the day, tell someone you trust about your exercise plans. Knowing that someone knows what you’re goals are for the day will keep you accountable to complete your workout.
Another tip: make fitness fun. Working out can become tedious very quickly if you don’t actually enjoy it. Get out of your comfort zone and try new things: Zumba, Yoga, strength training, step, running, swimming, Spinning, plyometrics, CrossFit, anything! The more forms of exercise you experiment with, the better chance you have of finding something you truly enjoy and look forward to each day.
It’s inevitable: some days, you will search for any excuse to skip your workout. It happens to the best of us, the most elite athletes, the New Year’s resolutioners, and probably you! For the days you don’t have a workout buddy egging you on during your workout or a class scheduled to keep you accountable, you can count on us to bust you out of your motivational rut. We’ve compiled the most motivating pick-me-ups for those blah days.
